Moving to Limassol: A Practical Newcomer's Guide

Limassol is the busiest moving destination in Cyprus — and the most confusing for newcomers. Here's what you actually need to know before you arrive.

Best neighbourhoods (and what they cost)

Germasogeia & Potamos Germasogeias

The expat default — close to the marina, international schools, and tourist beaches. Modern apartments, but the busiest traffic on the island — and the highest rents in the city.

Agios Tychonas

Quieter, more upmarket, with sea views and big villas. Better for families, at premium rents.

Agios Athanasios & Mesa Geitonia

Where most Cypriots actually live. Cheaper, friendlier, less English spoken. Great supermarkets and bakeries.

Old Town

Walkable, characterful, full of restaurants. Older buildings with smaller rooms, mid-range rents.

Paperwork you'll need

  • Yellow slip (MEU1) for EU citizens — apply at Migration in Limassol Polemidia.
  • TIN number from the tax office before you can rent properly.
  • Social Insurance number if you plan to work.
  • Rental contract stamped at the tax office — landlords sometimes "forget", insist on it.

Your first week

  • Open a bank account (Bank of Cyprus and Hellenic are the easiest for foreigners).
  • Get a CYTA or Cablenet internet contract — it takes 5–10 days to install.
  • Visit the Limassol Sustainable Mobility Centre for a bus pass if you don't have a car.

Things nobody tells you

  • Most apartments don't have ovens — check before signing.
  • Air-conditioning bills in July–September can be a real monthly shock.
  • Traffic on Makarios Avenue between 5–7 pm is brutal. Plan around it.
